O'Connor to retire from Supreme Court

Whoa!

Assuming Rehnquist also retires, it looks like Bush is going to get to nominate two! I just pray he does a better job than his Dad
(Souter )

This is it... I think this is going to be a battle like we've never seen... it's the Democrat's last stand and I don't think they're going to go down without a fight.

The stakes are huge.

Whoa!

It is my considered opinion that the liberals in Congress will stone-wall any nominations by President Bush.
Get ready for a fight? You are absolutely right!

This will give us another chance to watch the WEASELS, masquerading as respected Americans, in action.

I hope the Dems fight this one hard. Giving Bush 2 Supreme Court nominations is scary. I can only imagine what kind of right-wing conservitive Christian judges he is going to try and get in there. This can only end badly for any free thinkers in this country.

After their last few rulings, all I can say, is it's about time. The ED ruling was shear idiocy, IMO.

I'm sure there will be those that just oppose whatever he does, and draw it out for months, rather then doing anything important like dealing with China, or anything that do America, anything good in the long term..

Seven Republicans and seven DIMocrats made a compromise agreement to put aside the filibuster except in extraordinary circumstances. You will now see the DIMocrats blow that agreement away, and you will see, as I have said, you can not make deals with LIARS.

Maybe even some Republican Senators will see that you can't make a deal with the devil, and invoke the so-called NUCLEAR OPTION.

Amen to that!

Free thinkers? What, is that, a joke?

The "Free Thinkers" on the Supreme court just said that your local government can take your house away from you and give it to a "Fat Cat" developer, because he can generate more tax revenue than you can.

When Bush puts a black woman on the Supreme court what will the "Free Thinkers" have to say about that?

Red... All politicians are LIARS. Period! If you think your Republican politicians arent you must be living under a rock. I might like dems more than reps. but I dont fool myself into thinking that any of them are telling the truth about anything. They are in this for themselves, they dont give a flying f*ck about the rest of us.

UNGN...I cant argue the eminent domain ruling. Its sickening and just shows that America is headed down the wrong path. But on the other hand I dont want Bush filling the Supreme Court with a couple a religous wackos handing down morality rulings. The Supreme Court needs an even mix of conservatives and liberals to even things out. Remember, almost half the country voted for the other guy. That means there are alot of liberals and moderates that would rather not have a majority conservate Supreme Court. Its just sad that the Supreme Court in this country is a political. It should be a group of judges that rules for the best interest of the country, not whats good for one party or another.

I am an active Republican, but I also worry that a judge will be appointed that makes decisions based on his (or her) religious preference.
I can see President Bush making that mistake.

It was the liberals who were in the majority on the decision you call "sickening and just shows America is headed down the wrong path".

You want more of them on the court?

And that whole "I'm afraid of religious wacko's" thing is lame. The whole idea of religious wackos imposing their will on America is a bogey man constructed by the media. It is baseless.

Name one religious wacko judge or even one ruling by any judge that could be characterized as reflecting an out-of-the-mainstrean religious belief. It would be much easier to tick off anti-religious wacko rulings.

Exactly, which is why conservatives want less government and less power in the hands of those in government. As the Blob pointed out above, it was the liberals on the Court who expanded the power of the government at the expense of the rights of private individuals.

For the sake of discussion, let's say the religious wacko of your worst fear is appointed to the court. What ruling could they conceiveably make that would most upset you?

Devil's Advocate here
It is the current administration that passed the Partiot Act and allows the Federal Government to listen in to private phone calls if they have a hunch that you may be planning a terrorist act/ have no real evidence.
It is the current administration that created an entirely new Federal agency which is A LOT more government, not less.
The appellate judge wanted to allow the display of the Ten Commandments in the court house based on religious ideals - he was over turned by the Supreme Court.

I can't disagree, but none of that has anything to do with religious judges.

And if the Supreme Court was comprised of 9 religious wackos who said he could leave them up, so what? That's a pretty minor deal.

What's the theoretical worst possible ruling by a religious wacko judge that you can think of? Something that would have you totally upset.

In my opinion, the display of the Ten Commandments in a court house or other government building is a violation of the chruch and state.
But, I am not threatened by it - that is to say, even though I am against it I don't care enough to make an argument.

Ive got one that would make me very upset. Abortion! We all know Bush is against abortion. What would stop him from appointing justices that feel the same way and overturn Roe v. Wade. I know alot of you on this board are anit-abortionist but Im not sure I would want to live in this country if abortion is outlawed. It shouldnt be used as a method of birth control but there are too many stupid people in this country to not have it. There are already so many unwanted and uncared for children in this country. Could you imagine what the system would be like with that many more kids. I dont think that Bush would hesitate to do that. That would earn him and the reps brownie points with the conservate Christians in this country.

So you want to keep the population down by means of abortion? And you wouldnt want to live here if we didn't have this meathod? Was america so terrible before Roe v. Wade?

I agree though, this issue all boils down to abortion. Just like most politics.

Hey, Stage 2........where ya been? Nice to see you here. Same question for you as above. Who's the lying Republican? I got a list as long as my arm of DIMocrats who don't even have any honor.
