HELP Buying a used 10 bolt 8.2 posi rear how can I?

For my 1968 Chevelle
Buying a used 10 bolt 8.2 posi rear how can I make shore its good?
The rear is out of the car and the guy said the he has no problem with me pulling the cover off in order for me to look inside.
He did say that he cleaned the inside up real good
So I guess looking for particles and stuff like that is out.
What next?

I am thinking of bringing 3 big bars to put across the studs and see if the rear slips and how freely it slips if it does. Would this be enough of a of the car test?

What else could I look for?

HELP

If this is a stock GN rear or any stock gm rear I would do as you were thinking to check the clutch pack preload. I would look closely at the wear pattern on the ring and pinion. If the clutches are tight go with it if not you can rebuild them easily enough. Thats the great thing about the stock posi is it is rebuildable. Good luck Jon Hanson
