Stock Exhaust Manifolds

Were the stock exhaust manifolds 'dry mounted' (i.e. no gasket)? I took mine off to get the driver side repaired and there were no gaskets. All help Appreciated!!

1987 T - just starting to get her in shape for the summer! Thanks to all - I've learned quite a bit since I found this site.

Is it better/worse/no difference with no gaskets? Should I get a set or don't worry 'bout it? Thanks.

I would do gaskets, it won't hurt anything. Really sucks if it leaks when your done without em.

They will leak with a slight warp on the flange. I have gaskets on mine, because a pre-turbo leak will kill performance

the gaskets are not really needed...i replaced my ds header with a replacement postons header and used no gasket...seals perfectly...i also do not use gaskets on the turbo flanges...everything is bare metal to metal...no leaks here

It helps to lap the headers tube faces flat, before you install the headers. I use a 6" sharpening stone I got from bargain depot 8 years ago for $2.50.

I think the amount of heat produced would kill gaskets and warp flanges

Not the ones I have. They are not your typical header gasket that blows every six months. They are metal mesh and when I recently had them off, they looked great after at least a couple of years of use.
A lesser gasket may be susceptible to heat dmg. Also keeping the header bolts properly torqued is important

if 2 flat surfaces have always been bolted together then they wont wap

If you do put a gasket in it it will be hard to get them flat again since the gasket will give when you tighten the header up alowing the flange to warp.

I also donot run gaskets

I just used a strait edge with self stick sand paper to go across the flages to insure they are flat

keep in mind you cant blow a metal to metal joint but you can blow a gasket

if you really want it right have the machine shop plane the flanges to be perfectly flat
