Whats the Filter on the vac line of Vac Brake Booster

Can someone tell me what the black filter I see on some cars that have the Vac Brake conversion? Is it needed or just straight hose?

Thanks

I don't use them. No issues. I just run vacuum to the booster through a 3/8" hose from the PCV line to the check valve on the booster.
