Help GN is over boosting?
Ok Heres the deal. I have an 85 Hotair GN. The only thing done to it is an ATR pitbull chip, no cat or muffler, and a k&n air filter. Other than that it is a stock car with about 100k miles on it. Anyways the speedometer has been bouncing so I decided to take it out and grease it up, after I put it back togther I went to drive it to see if the speedometer bounced. It was fine at low speeds, but I decided to get on it and see if it bounced going to a higher speed, and thats when my problem occured. It down shifted and took off and all of a sudden I noticed that my boost gauge went over 15lbs. It will normally only go to about 12lbs cause it has a cracked passenger side manifold. I thought it was just a fluke so I tried it a few more times and each time it would go right past 15lbs, and I would let off cause I was affraid that it was to high. I checked all my boost line to the wastegate and dont see any problems with it. What could be causing this to happen? Thanks for your help. Dusty

You said the boost went over 15 when it downshifted. Some chips give you more boost in the lower gears. Is it possible that it's been doing that all the time and you maybe didn't notice?
Could you ease into it in D so it doesn't downshift and see what the boost is? Also (long shot here) could the weather have anything to do with it? |

Its always been about 12 or so because I usually always look at one of my gauges either the factory built in one or the one I added on the a pilar. Also the weather was hot so my car shouldnt have been running better. I was kind of wondering if it was the wastegate actuator not working right? Anyone have an extra hotair one they could let me borrow to see?

I do have an adjustable rod but the damn thing is rusted in place. It was on the car when we got it and I have tried everything to get it to move but no luck. Also I never took the dash out. I had an aftermarket two piece cable that was one really long piece that came down from the dash then a piece that was about 1 1/2 feet in length that went to the tranny. I took the little short piece out and felt the bind was in it, and left it out cause the longer one was long enough to do the job by itself.

Take your air line(from your workshop or a service station) and set it to 12psi, unhook the vaccuum line to wastegate and have yourself a short vaccuum line in hand. Put a boost of 12 lbs in the short hose going to the actuator (using the air nozzle) and see if it opens the waste gate. If it doesn't (and it may not) give it more pressure untill it does. Anyway this will test your actuator, it may be leaking and going bad. Hope this helps, Chuck
