external wastegate yes or no?

right now i have an internal wastegate on my car but have had a few people recomment going external, my question is there a benefit to going external over internal and does it justify the cost of the switch etc. basically pro's versus cons. would like to hear from real world experience of higher HP cars if they switched one way or the other and why thanks mike.

I've been told that the boost control of an external gate FAR exceeds that of the Houston style gates. I sold my THDP and am in the process of installing an ATR 3" with a 38mm Tial wastegate, thanks to Pro Trac racing.

im looking at the 44mm tial v44 gate but just want to be sure before i modify my header and weld my puck close on the dp. I like the 44mm with the band clamps for universal fit and also it will definetly expell the air with no problem especially since im looking to go bigger down the road. any other replies would be great.

Wont see much difference unless you're having problems with boost control. It is also related to the piping flow, the turbo, and the boost your running. When I had the 61, the internal gate didnt cut it at all, even with a custom DP puck and bored housing.

Commonly misunderstood fact: If you wish to run lower boost, you actually do need a larger gate than if you would running the same turbo at higher boosts (eh, in general anways). For eg, I'm running a GT42 on the street so I opted for the NewGen so I can control it at lower boost. Boost control is harder to control at lower levels b/c there is much higher flow required in the bypass routing.

For the most part that is correct, but there are 2 things I will add:

1: You cant go wrong with a larger gate, i.e. your not going to hurt anything. In your case with a int gate housing, you again are limited here b/c that is the first path before an ext. gate, so flow improvement in the gate can be offset by the restriction at the housing hole. On an ext gate turbo, the exhaust is taken right off the header and bypasses the turbo completely.

2: When you are running tight ramps on your BC, and you need to pop it quickly open, then that above paragraph is slightly skewed. Again, a higher flow gate is helpful.

Finally, I will say if you're going to get an external gate, go with a nice unit with a high flowing valve assy. Already your are limited flow-wise by the turbine housing and integrated WG hole so every bit you can get you must take. Also, if... (i mean WHEN) you go bigger turbo (yes, it will inevitably happen ) then you may be able to reuse the gate provided you made the right initial investement now. You could also just keep the internal and simply wait till you go with a turbo that requires an ext. gate... these types of turbos are more efficient at spinning up that turbine wheel anyway.

Phil

thanks phil if i go external i am looking at the TIAL V44 with the 44mm valve which should cover me no matter what setup i go with as i have been told and seeing these billet tials are very good wastegates.

PS a bit confused with the back and forth LOL ???
