Question about ALDL Connector

Maybe a dumb question, but I've gotta 84 GN, engine is an '86-'87 Intercooled.

I haven't checked my codes yet on the car, but I plan on this weekend. Since my ECM was changed out to work with the newer engine, should I still be able to test for codes through the ALDL connector?

the upper left 2 ports on the aldl are the a and b take a piece of wire and jump these and look at the engine light blinking if there is only a 12 then there is no codes.
