You're right on all 3 accounts. It does sit about 3" down into the tunnel, in a custom made box. You can see the opening in front of it 2 top pictures. The shifter was not modified at all.
The cable exits the box from the front, through the box. The welded in box and tunnel were sealed with urethane windshield from the underside after installation.
No engine braking is also correct, but I don't mind it a bit...that's what my brakes are for anyway. Makes it even more fun to drive.
